No spoken commentary is used. The music has the dual function of heightening the emotional enjoyment of the photography and of helping to lead the ear towards what the changing sequence of pictures is trying to say. Most of it is a conscious pastiche of the music associated with the periods depicted, or else conveys the atmosphere suggested by the earliest times, before man was able to formulate his musical thoughts.'
